Dornier Brand Bodega Restaurant

  Stellenbosch, November 2008

Christoph Dornier 1938-2008

A life dedicated to beauty

Christoph Dornier, the founder of Dornier Wines, passed away at the age of 69 in his home town of Lucerne, Switzerland. He was first and foremost a visionary and an independent mind. These were the main influences that shaped Dornier Wines as it is known today and which are evident in the cellar architecture, the art, the product design and the company culture.

The young Dornier team now walks together to fill those large footprints and we will continue to do so in Christoph’s spirit.
Wine News:  A fourth pirate on the hill and the latest accolades

  Donatus White

The new pirate on the block: We needed a Sauvignon Blanc for our Bodega Restaurant and decided to use our own grapes for a new product in the Cocoa Hill range. Like its siblings, the new Sauvignon Blanc is a fun wine of excellent quality and it is extremely drinkable. It is already available in four countries and we plan to increase production in 2009.

Accolades: Dornier has performed very well at Mundus Vini and was awarded five medals, the best of which was a Gold for the Donatus White. At IWSC we received six medals, including Best in Class for the Pinotage 07 – our most decorated wine this year.

We would also like to share a review by Rod Philips for the Donatus Red:

"A blend of 70% Cabernet Franc and 30% Merlot, this is a spectacular, well-structured red that’s dense and rich in flavours and texture. Everything is tight-grained here, from the layered nuances in the flavour profile, through the taut texture, to the fine, ripe tannins. It’s a wine that’s authoritative, and it calls for dense, well-flavoured food, like grilled sirloin steak or red game meat."

Food News: The Bodega Restaurant is now open for dinner

My definition of man is, ‘a Cooking Animal’.

Finally the wait is over and Bodega now serves Dinner from Thursday to Saturday. With the evening menu, head chef Naas Pinaar stays true to the Farm Cusine concept, adding a few delicacies.

There is only a few places in South Africa that serve Perlemoen (Engl. Abalone), for which Naas' family has been passing on recipes from generation to generation. One of Naas' favourites is also the oldest, where the Perlemoen is slowly cooked with white wine and then the sauce is thickened with brown bread crumbs and finished off with fresh lemon and a little grated nutmeg. Soon, there will also be fresh king oysters and shitake mushrooms grown in Stellenbosch.

In the last few years, a few artisanal producers in the region have started making some outstanding hard cheeses. Our cheese platter shows you the best that is currently available, accompanied by our home made bread.

Dornier Events: The Merkur party and the New Year's Eve dinner
Afrika Flug

Dornier Merkur is the name of a plane built by Claude Dornier that flew from Zurich to Cape Town in 1926/27. It was one of the first trans-African flights and the first ever on a seaplane. The trip has been documented in a book and a film by pilot and photographer Walter Mittelholzer. The original propeller can be seen in the departure hall of the Cape Town International Airport. During the very special evening in June, we showed passages from the film commented live by Aden Thomas, danced to songs of the Roaring Twenties performed by Melanie Scholtz and her band and spoiled our guests with the delicacies of the Bodega Kitchen.

It is soon time to say good bye to 2008 and welcome the New Year. We invite you to celebrate New Year's Even with an unforgettable Wine, Dine and Dance experience at the Dornier Bodega. The very best of Dornier Wines and Bodega dishes will be on offer for the night. We recommend to book early.

Northern Hemisphere: The Dornier Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 is coming of age and has developed into a very smooth, complex and harmonious food wine. A true Jem!
